10 protesters remanded for vandalising Rivers bank

Kenneth Nnadozie and nine other people have been remanded at a Port Harcourt detention facility for causing malicious damage to a commercial bank in the state's Borikiri area by a magistrates' court in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

According to PUNCH Metro, last week's protest by bank clients in the city about the new naira policy's shortage was hijacked by some thugs.

The thugs robbed onlookers and destroyed ATMs, buildings, and other property on the grounds of some banks during the incident.

After the attack, the thugs are alleged to have taken items as well.

On February 17, the suspects, who are facing six counts of conspiracy, housebreaking, stealing, and unlawful assembly, broke into a commercial bank, stole, damaged, and riotously gathered while claiming to be protesting the limited supply of the new naira notes.

The accused entered a plea of not guilty to the allegations, and their attorneys argued in favor of the bail request.

After hearing from the attorneys for the parties, Chief Magistrate Rita Ogugua delayed the case until February 22, 2023, so that bail could be discussed.

Ogugua gave the order to transport the suspects to the Port Harcourt detention facility.

The Chief Magistrate did, however, grant bail to a different group of eight defendants charged with the same six counts of conspiracy, burglary, theft, unlawful assembly, riotous assembly, and intentional damage to a state-owned commercial bank.
