A Week of the Past

Episode Five: Friday.

Normally, there is a common saying, 'Thank God It's Friday (TGIF)'. The acronym is the name of an American family-friendly prime time television programming block on the ABC network. However, the stars of the lineup thought the acronym as meaning 'Thank Goodness It's Funny'.

Most people gets excited when it is Friday, especially students and working class persons or the white-collar workers, because Friday ends their days of schooling and working activities for the week.

On the aspect of business men, their case is different because Friday is more like other days of work and hustle, so they patiently wait for the next day being Saturday before expressing their excitement for the weekend. Thus TGIS for business men.

8:10 A.M.: As we waited patiently, we still TGIS in advance, while business moved on as usual. Though it was Friday but we do treat it like a Saturday.

Our electrical dealers association officials appointed some of us to go on a hospital visitation to one of our members whom was involved in an accident; though not severe. We thanked God for his recovery.

I made some calls to my younger siblings in school to inquire on how they were faring, after we returned from our hospital visitation and also to know if they needed financial aid. They would always say yes, but then am always cautious on how i send money to them, sometimes on a monthly basis.

I was so glad when they both gained admission to tertiary institution, even though being aware of the increase in supportive responsibility, because my parents held the major responsibilities in the family.

11:45 A.M.: Some of my customers came to my shop to return some goods which i believed they may have stolen from the site they worked on cause they were regarded as electricians.

Most electricians are very fond of such behaviour which i am sincerely against, but business for me is all about profit, gain and more gain.

Majority of the electricians intentionally do quote more than required materials to their employers, after which they will sell off the reminants of the materials without the consent of their employers.

They do make a lot of money through this means, but not all af them gets lucky all the time. The people they sell those materials to also profit as well and sometimes we are not even aware of their deals before buying the materials from them.

1:50 A.M.: I love being alone and i guess that is just part of me. I have not yet figured out the cause of my loneliness yet; am an introvert. So i do not fancy much companies of people around me.

You will always find me at my shop when ever i am less busy, all alone with my thoughts. Fortunately for me, my loneliness at my shop does not last for long, as my stomach would perform its best at bringing to my knowledge that it is empty and it needs to be refilled.

4:20 A.M.: Like i said earlier, some Fridays were regarded as Saturdays, because the atmosphere sometimes tends to be dull and discouraging for business.

Despite the nature of the surroundings, the endeavour and willingness to continue the hustle till the last minute is everly there as the dullness does not affect every Friday.

The dull moment was brightened and made alive by a line person Oga Orji, who bought and brought his new Lexus X330 jeep for celebration amongst the line people. There were drinks and fried meats to consume, and we all did justice to that after we washed the car.

Washing of a newly bought car involves praying over it, testing it and pouring bottles of wines on it. It is a ritual we do perform. At this point, i trusted were my boy would be; of course collecting money from debtors.

7:50 P.M.: i stopped at Jideofor's house while going home, to pass my greetings to him and also congratulate him on his final completion and moving in to his new home. His house is about thirty-five minutes drive from my shop.

Jideofor was a former tenant at the compound i was residing before he moved to his new house. I was not expecting my visit to last so long, but it did.

Jideofors kind of business was totally different from mine, as he solely based on the sales of industrial materials, sometimes i envy him but am always proud of him.

He offered my boy and i a delicious meal with drinks. We almost spent the night at his place, so before we realized the time, it was alrady nine-fourty five at night.

I am OAJ.
