A Week of the Past

Episode Six: Saturday.

6:00 A.M.: Unlike the first Thursday of every month which is regarded as sanitation day at my business area, last Saturdays are regarded as sanitation day in the whole of Rivers state.

The sanitation last from six to ten in the morning, and it involves no official movement during this period. Everyone in the state is expected to be at their various houses observing the environment sanitation.

My dad and my mum paid me a visit at my shop, actually they were on their way to their own business and they decided to stop by. They were meant to travel to the village for a Coronation ceremony.

My dad was actually the one who opened my business for me, so i was kind of like working for him; that kind of a family business. In order not for me to be jobless after i graduated and as i await for my call up number and letter from NYSC.

9:30 A.M.: I had to visit the cyber cafe, since i was not satisfied with the informations i got from my phone browser. A lot of rumours flew then regarding the date for the release of call up number and letter from NYSC.

I do this most Saturdays, since the business environment is often not crowded on weekends. I could spend up to two hours plus in cyber cafes, surfing the net as well as checking for job offers, interview, and applying for the ones which i could. This was the period i even started blogging.

12:15 P.M.: Taking weekly account and stock was the next thing that kept me busy, since customers hardly come by on Saturdays and it is usually boring. Sometimes i wish not to come out for business on Saturdays but i can't just help it.

I put on major calls to my customers at Lagos, demanding for available goods, their prices and reduction in some of the goods prices. One of my customers then in Lagos was Oga Emeka Lagos; that is what i call him.

Oga Emeka Lagos was always of a great help to me, sometimes i do order goods on credit from him because i always paid him in due time.

We have known each other for more than two good years only through calls. Imagine knowing someone you have never met or seen before, yet you do business together and also built a high level of trust in business that involves risk, as business partners.

Unfortunately, Oga Emeka Lagos does not sell everything i needed, and i have yet more customers in Lagos.

2:30 P.M.: I drove my car off to Favour Gate, because i had received a call earlier that some of the goods i ordered from Lagos some days back had arrived.

Favour Gate is a waybill company that conveys goods and properties from one state to another, though not famously know as its' boundaries are restricted to some states.

Since i have my car, there is no point wasting money on cabs. Surely one must pay for waybill fees after goods identification and before leaving with the identified goods.

The distance is just a few kilometres from my shop.

3:30 P.M.: Saturday is known as a day of recovery, it involves balancing of weekly accounts, weekly sales, debit and credit; infact one will definitely need the knowledge of accounting.

I hardly give out goods on credit and i endeavour to clear the names of those at my credit book and that means i mostly demand for money from debtors myself.

Also i do go through the credit book myself to know the names of debtors to avoid the next week.

I received a call from one of my customers, who needed some goods at his own shop, cause i do take his route while going home. Lucky enough, he spends little or no money in conveying the goods to his shop.

5:50 P.M.: TGIS finally, i always feel the joy when ever i remember that the next day would be Sunday, because it is the only resting day for business men. Most greetings at this time was, 'till Monday' or for some, 'see you in church tomorrow'.

I never mentioned at any point since i embarked on this work, of going to the market. Well Saturdays' market were always remarkable, and i was lucky to have an apprentist who knows how to cook.

Our market timing was nothing higher than an hour and thirty minutes, cause i hate wasting my precious time at the market in buying maggi, meat, and other food stuffs. Other days we do go to the market, average time we do spend was fourty minutes.

8:00 P.M.: Correct me if i am wrong about this song we used to sing when we were younger:
Willy willy willy willy oh!
Men in the kitchen cooking rice and stew!
And that is what we do most night before going to sleep.

I am OAJ.
