Ondo State Poly Lecturers Suspend Seven-Week Strike

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics ASUP workers, who embarked on strike since 31th of August, 2017 have called off the strike.

Lecturers of the Rufus Giwa Polytechnics Owo (RUGIPO) in Ondo State has suspended their seven-week industrial action on Tuesday evening and are said to resume their normal activities.

The strike is said to have crippled activities on campus leaving lecture halls empty and students on various streets.

Correspondent from Sahara reporters learned that the strike was called off after the union held an emergency congress summoned by the executive of the ASUP.

This strike suspension was confirmed by the Chairman of the ASUP, Rafiu Ijawoye in Rufus Giwa Poly through a telephone chat with SaharaReporters in Akure.

He further said that the reason for the call off was the engagement the lecturers had in a series of negotiations with the government.

Mr. Ijawoye noted that the state government paid the striking lecturers one months's salary out of the ten months the government owe them. Adding that further details of the meeting would be revealed at a later time.

A source who luckily entered the hall during the meeting which was organised at the Adekunle Ajasin Auditorium of the school campus said that the angry lecturers vowed that they would resume their industrial actions if their demand were to be rejected.
I was just told now that we (students) are to resume back to campus with immediate effect, a student source was quoted saying.
The lecturers had been agitating for the payment of their salaries accruing up to ten months, They had also been asking government to ensure all programs offered by the polytechnics are duly accredited.
